This Master of Occupational Safety and Health Risk Management (MOSHRM) programme offered at OUM is a part-time open and distance learning (ODL) postgraduate programme which offers a qualification that provides a sound business and technical basis basis in the application of risk management principles to manage effectively safety and health issues in an organisation for business sustainability. This course includes study in the areas of risk management, management systems, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) legislations, Occupational Health and Hygiene, Occupational Safety, Process Safety Management, Six Sigma and Security Management. The capstone unit for the Masters is a work-related research project.

MOSHRM provides a unique mix of academic and industry relevance learning experiences to the learners to have the complete set of competencies as a Safety and Health Manager and Advisor who is capable to integrate OSH into business management. MOSHRM provide a unique mix of academic quality and industry relevance to develop sound, solid and professional competencies in OSH.

MOSHRM program is fully accredited by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), recognised by Public Service Department (JPA).

Career Outcomes

OSH professional practitioners are in demand because of the increasing focus on the management of occupational safety and health processes in accordance with the law and regulatory requirements. Graduates of this course are likely to have increased opportunities across a wide range of professions and industries.

Discount for the Physically Challenged Learners (OKU) and Senior Citizens

The University offers 50% discount for:
1. Senior citizens aged 60 and above on registration date; and
2. Physically challenged learners – a valid Orang Kelainan Upaya (OKU) is required.
These discounts are for subject fees only and are not applicable for research and other fees. The discounts are also not valid for second time registration and repeating of subjects.
Learners who receive this discount are not entitled to other discounts and promotions.

Re-registration fee of RM220 per semester is chargeable for extension of Masters Projects

Entry Requirements

Normal Entry
i. Pass Bachelor degree in Science, Engineering, Technology Management or any related field with a minimum CGPA of 2.50; or
ii. Pass Bachelor degree in Science, Engineering, Technology Management or its equivalent with CGPA below 2.50, is acceptable subject to a minimum of 5 years working experience in related field; or
iii. Other recognised equivalent qualifications.OR

APEL entry

  1. Malaysian; AND
  2. The candidate should be more than 30 years of age in the year of application; AND
  3. Relevant work experience / prior experiential learning; AND
  4. Pass the APEL Assessment (Aptitude Test, Portfolio & Interview) conducted by OUM; AND
  5. Possess the following qualification:
    • STPM / Recognised Diploma; Or
    • Matriculation / Foundation (credit score 50-52 credits; CGPA grade 2.00 and above; minimum study period of one year); Or
    • A-Level (minimum of 3 courses; minimum grade E; duration of study at least 18 months); Or
    • International Baccalaureate Diploma (minimum of 6 courses and 3 required elements; minimum grade of 24 points and above; duration of study at least 2 years).

  1. The provisional offer of admission will be revoked if the candidate:
    • Fails to submit evidence of qualification within the stipulated date; or
    • Does not meet the entry requirements of the University.

  1. What is aim of MOSHRM?
    The aim of the programme is to produce Safety and Health Managers / Advisors who have a wide range of advanced knowledge and skills in the specialised areas to deal with the demands of the new development in the field of occupational safety and health and contribute to the success of preventive culture in Malaysia.

  2. What learners will achieve upon completion of MOSHRM?
    Upon completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:

    • Acquire and apply significant advanced specialised knowledge in the field of safety and health;
    • Demonstrate inter/multi-disciplinary technical competencies in the safety and health field;
    • Practice good social culture, global and environmental responsibilities of safety and health profession in delivering ideas for safety and health improvement and advancement;
    • Commit professionally, ethically and with humane responsibility, in line with the safety and health field and the industry;
    • Communicate effectively both in written and spoken form with the safety and health professional teams and community and displaying strong leadership skills;
    • Generate advanced solutions to safety and health problems using scientific and critical thinking skills and conduct research to empower knowledge solutions; and
    • Recognise the need for and to engage in lifelong learning and management of information in the safety and health field to keep up to date with global changes or new findings so that good advice can be proposed to the industries.
  3. What is the duration to complete MOSHRM?
    The minimum duration to complete MOSHRM is 2 years and the maximum duration is 4 years.

  4. When can I join MOSHRM?
    MOSHRM programme has intakes in the January, May and September semesters.

  5. Is MOSHRM programme offered in full-time or part-time mode?
    MOSHRM programme offered in part-time mode, making it ideal for workforces who want to improve their skills, knowledge and skills without having to leave work or compromise with their life responsibilities.

  6. What are the entry requirements for MOSHRM?
    The Normal entry requirements for MOSHRM are as follows:

    • Pass Bachelor degree in Science, Engineering, Technology Management or any related field with a minimum CGPA of 2.50; or
    • Pass Bachelor degree in Science, Engineering, Technology Management or its equivalent with CGPA below 2.50, is acceptable subject to a minimum of 5 years working experience in related field; or
    • Other recognised equivalent qualifications.
  7. If I do not have any relevant bachelor degree, can I still enrol MOSHRM?
    Yes, you may enrol MOSHRM through APEL A.APEL entry

    • Malaysian; AND
    • The candidate should be more than 30 years of age in the year of application; AND
    • Relevant work experience / prior experiential learning; AND
    • Pass the APEL Assessment (Aptitude Test, Portfolio & Interview) conducted by OUM; AND
    • Possess the following qualification:

    Yes, currently MOSHRM is recognised by DOSH Malaysia for the following OUM’s Learning Centres:

  9. What is the uniqueness of MOSHRM?
    MOSHRM provides a sound business and technical basis in the application of risk management principles to manage effectively safety and health issues in an organisation for business sustainability.  The diet also includes Security Management and Six Sigma to offer varieties in graduates’ competencies.

  10. What are the subjects offered in MOSHRM?
    MOSHRM consists of 12 subjects plus a master project with total of 42 credits.  The subjects are as follows:

  11. What is the scope of MOSHRM’s Project (SMOP5206)?
    This course prepares the students to carry out research in the related field of occupational safety and health (OSH) comprising of relevant OSH theory and practical components, practices good communication skills through presentation and write comprehensive project report in accordance to academic writing format to function effectively at managerial level.

  12. What is the minimum duration to complete the MOSHRM’s Project (SMOP5206)?
    At least TWO semesters are required to complete the MOSHRM’s Project (SMOP5206).

  13. What is the mode of assessment in MOSHRM?
    Learners will be assessed through assignments and final exams in most of the subjects. The assignment carries 60 per cent and final exam carries 40 per cent.
  14. What is the minimum CGPA to graduate in MOSHRM?
    Achieved a final CGPA of at least 3.00 for conferral of MOSHRM degree.

  15. What is the fee for MOSHRM?
    The fee details are as per given in the Fees page in the programme website.

  16. Can I apply for Employees Provident Fund (EPF) if I want to MOSHRM?
    Yes, you may.  Kindly visit  https://www.kwsp.gov.my/member/withdrawals/partial/education for more information on Education Withdrawal.

  17. Can I apply for credit transfer in MOSHRM?
    Learners may apply for Credit Transfer of postgraduate level courses successfully completed at another recognised university or institution into MOSHRM, provided that:

    • The courses are relevant to his/her programme of study;
    • The credits to be exempted shall be for courses that are equivalent to those courses offered at the University and shall be of a minimum of grade B (65 marks and above);
    • The courses applied must be taken not less than five (5) years prior to the application; and
    • The number of credit-hours approved for the transfer of credits must not exceed one-third (1/3) or 33% of the total credit hours for a particular programme.
  18. Can I use my working experience to apply for credit transfer in MOSHRM?
