The Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS) is designed to provide knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to be competent, safe and efficient health care providers. This is aligned with the organization`s mission to widen access to quality education as well as to provide lifelong learning opportunities by engaging learning environment at competitive and affordable cost.

The program draws upon theoretical and practical perspectives to illuminate understanding of education and the context in which it takes place. The courses provide learners with knowledge in nursing sciences. It is designed to advance the qualification needed for nurses for their career pathway. Its distinctive goal is to enhance nurses` competency to meet with the needs of the workplace/community; providing nurses` the ability for social/professional mobility and ultimately raising standards of living.

Is the Bachelor of Nursing (BNS) programme offered in full-time or part-time mode?
The BNS programme is run in part-time mode, making it particularly suitable for working nurses seeking to upgrade their qualifications, knowledge and skills without having to give up their jobs or compromise their personal responsibilities.

How is the programme different from similar nursing programmes offered elsewhere?
This programme is different from those at other institutions because the OUM curriculum has been put together by local academics to ensure the subjects offered can meet the requirements of the Malaysian Nursing Board. This programme also offers 42 hours of credit transfer for learners who previously completed a diploma programme (refer the details below).

It is designed to advance the qualification needed for nurses’ career pathway. Its distinctive goal is to enhance nurses’ competency to meet the needs of the workplace/community, improve their ability for social/professional mobility, and ultimately raise standards of living. The programme also offers elective courses in Arabic Language for Healthcare Professionals, and Nutrition & Dietetic. Learners are required to choose one elective only.

How fast can I complete this programme?
This is a four-year programme. With credit exemption, you will be able to finish within three years and eight months if you follow the structure without any deferment.

How is this programme delivered?
This programme runs in online as well as blended modes. Online mode means that you can follow the programme from anywhere in Malaysia, at your own pace, alongside your online peers, with the guidance of your e-tutor. In this mode, you need not attend face-to-face tutorials or seminars, but you are advised to attend at least three tutorials out of the five scheduled in a semester. Blended mode refers to a combination of online study and face-to-face tutorials/seminars. Face-to-face tutorials/seminars are supplementary, and useful only to those who need them.

This flexibility of modes is a special feature at OUM, the first open and distance learning university in Malaysia. It is particularly suitable for self-directed adult learners who want to upgrade their skills and qualifications on a part-time basis.

Once you enrol in this programme, you will be able to log in to myINSPIRE, the learner management system. This portal comes equipped with all the resources a learner would need, including e-modules, e-forum, e-Tutorial, digital library references, etc.

When can I enrol into this programme?
This programme is open for registration three times a year: in January, May and September.

Who are the faculty members and experts responsible for teaching this programme?
This programme is delivered by qualified and experienced subject-matter experts and tutors/facilitators with qualifications from reputable universities.

The current Programme Director is Yee Bit Lian. Yee obtained her master’s degree from Northumbria University (majoring in Nursing) and her bachelor’s degree from Hertfordshire University. She also has a post basic advanced diploma from University Malaya Medical Centre (majoring in Critical Care Nursing).

What course materials are available at OUM?
All core learning materials are provided online, and some references are also available for library loan. They include eBook, learning kit and course modules in pdf format. Learners may also use OUM’s physical and digital libraries to access a wide range of learning materials.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment methods vary from course to course. Most courses have assignments and final exams.

How much does the programme cost?
The total fees are RM27,371.

This programme runs in online as well as blended modes. Online mode means that you can follow the programme from anywhere in Malaysia, at your own pace, alongside your online peers, with the guidance of your e-tutor. In this mode, you need not attend face-to-face tutorials or seminars, but you are advised to attend at least three tutorials out of the five scheduled in a semester. Blended mode refers to a combination of online study and face-to-face tutorials/seminars. Face-to-face tutorials/seminars are supplementary, and useful only to those who need them.

This flexibility of modes is a special feature at OUM, the first open and distance learning university in Malaysia. It is particularly suitable for self-directed adult learners who want to upgrade their skills and qualifications on a part-time basis.

Once you enrol in this programme, you will be able to log in to myINSPIRE, the learner management system. This portal comes equipped with all the resources a learner would need, including e-modules, e-forum, e-Tutorial, digital library references, etc.

When can I enrol into this programme?
This programme is open for registration three times a year: in January, May and September.

Who are the faculty members and experts responsible for teaching this programme?
This programme is delivered by qualified and experienced subject-matter experts and tutors/facilitators with qualifications from reputable universities.

The current Programme Director is Yee Bit Lian. Yee obtained her master’s degree from Northumbria University (majoring in Nursing) and her bachelor’s degree from Hertfordshire University. She also has a post basic advanced diploma from University Malaya Medical Centre (majoring in Critical Care Nursing).

What course materials are available at OUM?
All core learning materials are provided online, and some references are also available for library loan. They include eBook, learning kit and course modules in pdf format. Learners may also use OUM’s physical and digital libraries to access a wide range of learning materials.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment methods vary from course to course. Most courses have assignments and final exams.

How much does the programme cost?
The total fees are RM27,371.

What if I am physically disabled (OKU) or a senior citizen?
There are special discounts available for you. The University offers 50% discount for:

  • Senior citizens aged 60 and above on registration date, or
  • Physically disabled learners (must have a valid Orang Kelainan Upaya (OKU) card).

The discounts are not valid for second-time registration or learners involved in the repeating of subjects.  Learners who receive this discount are not entitled to other discounts and promotions.
