Overview

Diploma in Accounting programme aims to produce graduates with the fundamental knowledge and technical skills for the semi-professional accounting workforce to meet the public and private sectors’ needs.

This programme is designed to achieve the following Programme Education Objectives (PEO):

PEO1: To produce graduates who are well trained with knowledge and skills in accounting and other related disciplines.

PEO2: To produce graduates who provide ethically and professionally accounting services in business and society.

PEO3: To produce graduates who are able to respond and communicate the related accounting issues effectively.

PEO4: To produce graduates who are able to enhance their knowledge and abilities continuously and to explore the managerial and entrepreneurial activities.

Programme Synopsis

The program is designed to produce knowledgeable and competent accounting graduates. The curriculum of the program includes the knowledge and skill required for career paths in accounting and other related fields to fulfill the organisation’s workforce demands. Graduates are expected to be able to serve in business and non-business organisations. In order to qualify for the diploma, a minimum of 90 credit hours of approved courses is required.

* International students are required to pay registration fees of RM1,500 and an additional 20% for the tuition fees.

Discount for the Physically Challenged Learners (OKU) and Senior Citizens

The University offers 50% discount for:
1. Senior citizens aged 60 and above on registration date; and
2. Physically challenged learners – a valid Orang Kelainan Upaya (OKU) is required.
These discounts are for subject fees only and are not applicable for research and other fees. The discounts are also not valid for second time registration and repeating of subjects.
Learners who receive this discount are not entitled to other discounts and promotions.

Entry Requirements

Normal Entry

  • A pass in SPM or its equivalent with a minimum of 3 credits including Mathematics, and a pass in English; OR
  • A pass in Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) or its equivalent, with a minimum of Grade C (GP 2.0) in any subject, and credits in Mathematics and a pass in English at SPM level; OR
  • A pass in Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) with a minimum grade of Maqbul (pass) and credits in Mathematics and a pass in English at SPM level; OR
  • A pass in SKM Level 3 in a related field and a pass in SPM with a minimum of 1 credit in any subject with credits in Mathematics and a pass in English; OR
  • A certificate or its equivalent in a related field OR

APEL entry

  • Malaysian; and
  • Candidate must be 20 years old and above in the year of application being made; and
  • Have previous working experience/learning relevant to the field applied; and
  • Pass APEL Assessment for a Diploma (conducted by OUM).

Note:
English competency requirement for international students: Score of TOEFL 550 or IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

  1. What is a Diploma in Accounting (DIA)?
    The Diploma in Accounting (DIA) programme aims to produce graduates with the fundamental knowledge and technical skills for the semi-professional accounting workforce to meet the public and private sectors’ needs.  The objectives of this programme are to produce graduates who are well trained with knowledge and skills in the field of accounting and other related disciplines, provide ethically and professionally accounting services in business and society, are able to respond and communicate the related accounting issues effectively and are able to enhance their knowledge and abilities continuously and to explore the managerial and entrepreneurial activities.
  2. Why should enrol in DIA?
    This programme is designed to ensure that potential graduates are well equipped with the knowledge and skills to meet the challenging work environment.  Those who wish to be marketable and relevant in any industry should choose to pursue a study in accounting.
  3. Who should apply for DIA?
    Any candidate who is motivated to pursue an accounting programme to become semi-professional accounting practitioners and further studies in the higher-level programme, especially employees from relevant industries, and who is determined to develop skills and knowledge for better job prospects.  Besides, fresh graduates from SPM, STPM, STAM, SKM or equivalent who wish to pursue the accounting programme. 
  4. What is the entry requirement to enrol for DIA?
    Candidate has TWO (2) options, which is through Normal Entry:

    • A pass in SPM or its equivalent with a minimum of 3 credits including Mathematics, and a pass in English; or

  5. Is DIA offered in full-time or part-time mode?
    All OUM degree programmes offered in Malaysia are run in Part-time mode, making them particularly suitable for working adults seeking to upgrade their qualifications, knowledge and skills without having to give up their jobs or compromise on their life responsibilities.
  6. Does the Malaysian government recognise DIA?
    DIA (MQA/FA3793) is fully accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
  7. What does DIA offer me?
    After you have completed a Diploma in Accounting, you are expected to be able to:

    • Explain the concepts, importance, roles, assumptions, principles and standards of accounting.
    • Prepare full set of accounts for sole proprietorship, partnership, companies, costing information, management accounting information, and tax computation and audit process.
    • Discover the different roles and responsibilities in the changing economic and societal needs.
    • Demonstrate the required values, ethics and attitudes that consistent with the accounting profession.
    • Demonstrate leadership, interpersonal and effective communication skills with the management team.
    • Analyse the accounting, financial and other issues by using scientific methods and critical evaluation.
    • Apply relevant management information skills from a variety of sources for continuous self-development and life-long learning.
    • Expand the entrepreneurial and managerial skills for career and life advancement.
  8. What are the courses I will learn in DIA?
    You will learn various functional areas of core courses of accounting including financial accounting, management accounting, taxation, auditing, computerised accounting, economics, business mathematics and statistics, management, and also information technology as to ensure the adaptability of the students with the rapid changes in the accounting world. The courses offered under DIA can be classified into 3 categories:
    MPU Courses (4 courses);
    University Courses (5 courses); and
    Core Courses (22 courses);
  9. How soon can I complete DIA?
    DIA is a 90 credit-hour programme, which means that it can typically be completed in 10 semesters. That is approximately 3 years and 1 semester if the programme is completed without any credit transfer and if learners take the standard 3 courses per semester path.
  10. How is DIA delivered?
    DIA is run in blended as well as online modes. Online mode means that you can follow an OUM programme from anywhere in Malaysia, at your own pace and alongside your online peers, with the guidance of your e-tutor.  Blended mode refers to a combination of online study and face-to-face tutorials/seminars. Face-to-face tutorials are supplementary and useful only to those who need them and are offered at OUM Learning Centres. This flexibility of modes is a specialty of OUM, the first open and distance learning university in Malaysia. It is particularly suitable for self-directed adult learners who want to upgrade their skills and qualifications.
  11. When can I join DIA?
    DIA programme has three intakes a year which is in January, May and September semesters.
  12. Who are the academic staff responsible for DIA?
    DIA programme at OUM is delivered by qualified and experienced subject-matter experts and tutors with degrees from reputable universities.  The Programme Director is Pn. Zulaihan Ismail.
  13. Are course materials provided by OUM?
    OUM provides all core learning materials. Learners may use OUM’s myInspire and OUM’s physical and digital libraries to access a wide range of learning materials.
  14. How will I be assessed during my study in DIA?
    For DIA, assessment methods vary from course to course. Most courses in DIA have assignments and final exams.
  15. How much are the fees to pursue DIA?
    Are there special rates for senior citizens and physically-challenged learners?

Accounting graduates are expected to serve in government agencies, private companies, non-profit organisations, accounting firms, banking industries, financial sectors, consulting services, manufacturing companies, retail businesses and entrepreneurship fields.
