CONGRATULATIONS, DR NANTHA!

Head of Learning Technology, Assoc Prof Dr Nantha Kumar Subramaniam, has made the University proud, winning two merit awards at the MSC Malaysia AsiaPacific ICT Alliance Awards (MSC Malaysia APICTA Awards) 2019 event at the KL Convention Centre on 3 October.

The awards were given in recognition of the instructionbased intelligent chatbots to learn Java programming language which he developed. The chatbots won the awards in the categories of Education and, Research and Development.

“These chatbots convincingly simulate how a human would behave as a conversational partner and at the same time, teach students by turning a lecture into a series of messages which resemble a standardised chat conversation. “The chatbots follow a problem-based approach – learners solve programming problems with coaching from an automated tutor.

This approach fosters effective thinking and reflection and provides learners with feedback on their progress throughout the learning process,” says Dr Nantha.

The objective of the MSC Malaysia APICTA Awards is to provide recognition to outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations with operations in Malaysia that have contributed to the development of MSC Malaysia initiatives or in building applications and services for the benefit of the country. It recognises creativity, innovation and excellence in Malaysian information and communications technology.

By winning the awards, Dr Nantha has qualified to represent Malaysia at the International APICTA Awards 2019 which will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, from 18 to 22 November.
