Programme Synopsis

The Bachelor of Communication (BComm) is designed to produce graduates with comprehensive knowledge that informs, moves, creates and shapes the world of communication. Students will be exposed to a broad-based learning experience encompassing nearly all major aspects of communication such as journalism, advertising, broadcasting, corporate communication and public relations.

The programme will also develop learners’ ability to apply communication techniques critically and objectively in real life situations.

Career Prospects

Due to a broad range of communication subjects covered in this programme, graduates are expected to be able to fit into various professions, both in public and private sectors. Since employers nowadays are looking for versatility and flexibility among fresh graduates, the Bachelor of Communication programme precisely answers that need as learners are exposed to multi-disciplinary knowledge and diverse skills not only in communication but also in the social sciences.

Graduates can find ready employment in advertising, journalism, news media, copy writing, editing, public affairs and public relations.

PROGRAMME EDUCATION OBJECTIVES (PEO)

This programme aims to produce graduates that are:

PEO 1: knowledgeable and competent with comprehensive knowledge and skills in communication and other relevant disciplines which can be applied in communication and social environment. (Cognitive)

PEO 2: Effective in communication and demonstrate good leadership quality in early childhood organisation. (Psychomotor)

PEO 3: able to respond/solve communication and social issues innovatively, creatively and ethically through sustainable approach. (Cognitive)

PEO 4: to adapt to the dynamic changes in the social and communication environment as well as to pursue lifelong learning. (Affective)

 

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLO)

Upon completion of all courses in this programme, the graduates should be able to:

PLO1:   Acquire knowledge of concepts, principles, practices and standards of communication and other relevant disciplines for the purpose of academic or work. (Knowledge and Understanding).

PLO2: Think critically and suggest possible solutions using the acquired knowledge and skills in solving problems related to issues within the social and communication environment. (Cognitive Skill)

PLO3:  Apply practical and theoretical understanding in planning, organising, leading and controlling for the purposes of managing functions and processes of communication an in organisation or society. (Practical Skill) 

PLO4: Use acquired knowledge of the communication field for the purpose of academic or workplace. (Interpersonal Skill)

PLO5: Communicate effectively in performing personal and work related roles. (Communication Skill)

PLO6: Use relevant management information from various digital resources for continuous self-development. (Digital Skill)

PLO7: Demonstrate the ability to interpret graphics and numerical data for the personal usage and to solve real world problem. (Numeracy Skill)

PLO8:   Perform related roles at various levels as leaders in organisation and facilitate positively to the community and relevant stakeholders. (Leadership, Autonomy, and Responsibility) 

PLO9:  Adapt different roles required in society and contribute positively to the community and relevant stakeholders. (Personal Skill)

PLO10:  Enhance managerial and entrepreneurship skills in striving to accomplish the highest achievement. (Entrepreneurial Skill)

Kemasukan Biasa

i. Lulus STPM atau setaraf dengan minimum Gred C (NGMP 2.00) dalam 2 mata pelajaran dan kredit Bahasa Inggeris pada peringkat SPM atau yang setaraf; atau
ii. Lulus STAM dengan minimum gred Jayyid dan kredit Bahasa Inggeris pada peringkat SPM atau yang setaraf; atau
iii. Lulus Diploma (Tahap 4 MQF) atau yang setaraf dengan minimum PNGK 2.00 dan kredit Bahasa Inggeris pada peringkat SPM atau yang setaraf; atau
iv. Lulus Diploma (Tahap 4 MQF) dalam Media dan Komunikasi atau yang setaraf; atau
v. Lulus Matrikulasi/Foundation/Asasi atau setaraf dengan minimum PNGK 2.00 dan kredit Bahasa Inggeris pada peringkat SPM atau yang setaraf; atau
vi. Lulus UEC dengan minimum Gred B dalam 5 mata pelajaran termasuk Bahasa Inggeris; atau
vii. Kelayakan lain yang diiktiraf setara dengannya.

Syarat kompentensi Bahasa Inggeris bagi pelajar antarabangsa: Skor TOEFL 500 atau IELTS 5.0 atau yang setaraf.

Nota:
Syarat kredit Bahasa Inggeris peringkat SPM bagi calon (i), (ii), (iii) dan (v) boleh dikecualikan jika kelayakan tersebut mengandungi mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggeris dan pencapaiannya setara/lebih daripada keperluan kerdit mata pelajaran tersebut pada peringkat SPM. (Kesetaraan mata pelajaran adalah tanggungjawab PPT dan PPT perlu mempunyai polisi/prosedur dalaman yang kukuh dalam membuat penilaian kesetaraan tersebut)

• Warganegara Malaysia; dan
• Calon hendaklah berumur 21 tahun dan ke atas pada tahun permohonan dibuat; dan
• Mempunyai pengalaman kerja/pengalaman pembelajaran terdahulu yang berkaitan; dan
• Lulus Penilaian APEL bagi Sarjana Muda (yang dikendalikan oleh OUM).

Normal Entry

i. Pass STPM or its equivalent, with minimum Grade C (GP 2.00) in 2 subjects and a credit in English at SPM level or its equivalent; or
ii. Pass STAM with minimum grade of Jayyid and a credit in English at SPM level or its equivalent; or
iii. Pass Diploma (MQF Level 4) or its equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 and a credit in English at SPM level or its equivalent; or
iv. Pass Diploma (MQF Level 4) in Media and Communication or its equivalent; or
v. Pass Matriculation/Foundation/Asasi or its equivalent, with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 and a credit in English at SPM level or its equivalent; or
vi. Pass UEC with minimum Grade B in 5 subjects including English; or
vii. Other recognised equivalent qualifications.

English competency requirement for international students: Score of TOEFL 500 or IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.

Note:
The credit requirement in English at SPM level for candidates (i), (ii), (iii) and (v) can be exempted if the qualifications comprise of English and the achievement is equivalent to/above the credit requirement of the subject at SPM level. (Equality of the subjects is the responsibility of HEP and the HEP needs to have strong internal policies/procedures in assessing the equality).

• Malaysian; and
• Candidate must be 21 years old and above in the year of application being made; and
• Have previous working experience/learning relevant to the field applied; and
• Pass APEL Assessment for Bachelor Degree (conducted by OUM).

    1. Fails to submit evidence of qualification within the stipulated date; or
    2. Does not meet the entry requirements of the University.

Discount for the Physically Challenged Learners (OKU) and Senior Citizens

The University offers 50% discount for:

  • Senior citizens aged 60 and above on registration date; and
  • Physically challenged learners – a valid Orang Kelainan Upaya (OKU) is required.

These discounts are for subject fees only and are not applicable for research and other fees. The discounts are also not valid for second time registration and repeating of subjects.

Learners who receive this discount are not entitled to other discounts and promotions.

    All degrees programmes offered in OUM are run in part-time mode, making them particularly suitable for working adults seeking for flexibility to upgrade their qualifications, knowledge and skills without having to give up their jobs or compromise on their life responsibilities.
  2. How are OUM’s Bachelor of Degree of Communication programmes different from Communication programmes offered in other institutions?
    The Bachelor of Communication programme offered by Open University Malaysia is slightly different from other communication programmes offered by conventional public or private universities in Malaysia.  In this programme, you are expose to a broad-based learning experience encompassing nearly all major aspects of communication such as journalism, advertising, broadcasting, corporate communication and public relations.  The programme will also develop your ability to apply communication techniques critically and objectively in real life situations.
    This programme is offered to produce versatile graduates and have a balanced knowledge in the fields of communication to suit the current situation. Also, this programme will provide creative and competent graduates who are capable of understanding and handling issues pertaining to communication.  The curriculum is designed to enable graduates to obtain knowledge in analysing and solving societal and social issues within the nation.

  4. What are the courses offered under BCOM programme?

  5. How soon can I complete BCOM programme?
    BCOM is a 120 credit-hour programme, which means that it can typically be completed in 14 semesters. That’s approximately 4 ½ years if the programme is completed without any credit transfer, and if learners take the standard 3 courses per semester path.
    However, with related diploma in Communication, you are allowed to apply for Credit Transfer (**) up to 30% and Credit Awards (**) up to 30% through APEL C.

  6. When can I join BCOM Programme?
    BCOM programmes have intakes in the January, May and September semesters.

  7. How much does it cost to pursue BCOM Programme? Are there any special rates for senior citizens and physically-challenged learners?
    Fees for BCOM Programme amount to RM21,840. For full breakdown of fees by semester:

  8. Can I apply for a PTPTN loan if I want to pursue BCOM Programme?
    The PTPTN loan is only available to Malaysian citizens enrolled in a recognised undergraduate programme. You can only apply for a PTPTN loan after you have applied, been accepted and registered in the programme. For more information on PTPTN loan, visit http://www.ptptn.gov.my/
