Programme Synopsis

OUM’S Master of English Studies programme, or MEST, is an advanced degree that caters to learners seeking to deepen and widen their appreciation of English. Suitable for both English and non-English majors, and uniquely different from traditional offerings, the MEST curriculum is reflective of English as an evolving intellectual discipline offered in progressive universities across the globe. Providing learners with a thorough immersion in the discipline, MEST features exciting courses in writing, linguistics, literature, and cultural studies.

Learners who successfully complete an English Studies programme at OUM can expect to be able to:

  • demonstrate advanced English language proficiency skills and knowledge
  • engage imaginatively in the advanced process of reading, analysing and/or producing complex and sophisticated literary and non-literary texts and discourse
  • demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of contextual approaches to the production and reception of texts and discourses across fields
  • reflect critically upon textual production and reception across time and space and in their own practice
  • apply a range of subject-specific and transferrable skills, including high-order conceptual, analytic and communication skills embark on further study in English or related disciplines at higher levels.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEO)

The PEO are to produce postgraduates in the field of English Studies who will be:

  1. Highly knowledgeable and technically competent in the English language and advanced literacy skills, and driven to provide equitable solutions to the relevant stakeholders.
  2. Equipped with advanced interpersonal and communicative skills, able to collaborate well with others, and lead where required, in the multiple domains of life.
  3. Ethically upright and compassionate members of society.
  4. Creatively driven to continually acquire new knowledge and skills as a commitment to lifelong learning, as well as to create entrepreneurial opportunities for the advancement of self and society.

Programme Learning Outcomes (PLO)

By the successful completion of the programme, learners should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate mastery of knowledge and understanding of the underlying values, concepts, theories, and skills relevant to English Studies.

Kemasukan Biasa
i. Ijazah Sarjana Muda dengan PNGK minimum 2.50 atau yang setara dengannya seperti yang diterima oleh Senat PPT; atau
ii. Ijazah Sarjana Muda atau yang setara dengannya tetapi tidak mencapai PNGK 2.50, boleh diterima masuk tertakluk kepada minimum 5 tahun pengalaman bekerja dalam bidang yang relevan.


Kemasukan APEL

  1. Warganegara Malaysia; DAN
  2. Calon hendaklah berumur 30 tahun dan ke atas pada tahun permohonan dibuat; DAN
  3. Mempunyai pengalaman bekerja/pengalaman pembelajaran terdahulu yang berkaitan; DAN
  4. Lulus Penilaian APEL bagi Sarjana (yang dikendalikan oleh OUM); DAN
  5. Memiliki kelayakan seperti berikut:
    • STPM / Diploma yang diiktiraf; Atau
    • Matrikulasi / Asasi / Foundation (nilai kredit 50-52 kredit ; nilai gred PNGK 2.00 dan ke atas ; tempoh pengajian sekurang-kurangnya setahun) ; Atau
    • A-Level (jumlah kursus minimum 3 ; nilai gred minimum E ; tempoh pengajian sekurang-kurangnya 18 bulan) ; Atau
    • International Baccalaureate Diploma (jumlah kursus minimum 6 kumpulan kursus dan 3 elemen wajib ; nilai gred minimum 24 point dan ke atas ; tempoh pengajian sekurang-kurangnya 2 tahun).

Normal Entry
i. Bachelor degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 or its equivalent as accepted by Senate; or
ii. Bachelor degree or its equivalent with CGPA below 2.50, is acceptable subject to a minimum of 5 years working experience in related field


APEL entry

  1. Malaysian; AND
  2. The candidate should be more than 30 years of age in the year of application; AND
  3. Relevant work experience / prior experiential learning; AND
  4. Pass the APEL Assessment (Aptitude Test, Portfolio & Interview) conducted by OUM; AND
  5. Possess the following qualification:
    • STPM / Recognised Diploma; Or
    • Matriculation / Foundation (credit score 50-52 credits; CGPA grade 2.00 and above; minimum study period of one year); Or
    • A-Level (minimum of 3 courses; minimum grade E; duration of study at least 18 months); Or
    • International Baccalaureate Diploma (minimum of 6 courses and 3 required elements; minimum grade of 24 points and above; duration of study at least 2 years).


  1. The provisional offer of admission will be revoked if the candidate:
    1. Fails to submit evidence of qualification within the stipulated date; or
    2. Does not meet the entry requirements of the University.
  2. Entry requirements are subject to change as stipulated by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.

Discount for the Physically Challenged Learners (OKU) and Senior Citizens

The University offers 50% discount for:

  • Senior citizens aged 60 and above on registration date; and
  • Physically challenged learners – a valid Orang Kelainan Upaya (OKU) is required.

These discounts are for subject fees only and are not applicable for research and other fees. The discounts are also not valid for second time registration and repeating of subjects.

Learners who receive this discount are not entitled to other discounts and promotions.
