Programme Synopsis

This Master of Information Technology (MIT) program aims at producing responsible, innovative and creative graduates with skills in planning, organizing, designing and managing variety of ICT-based solutions to different kind of organizations.

This programme is carried out to prepare the workforce by strengthening the managerial skills and competencies in computerised technical know-how, improving managerial capability in handling information management in business organisations, producing knowledge workers who will be the future leaders in the nation’s progress and enhancing analytical skills and problem-solving capability in handling current issues in computer related management. The courses offered in this programme will be expected to produce graduates, whom are knowledgeable in the field of technology as well as sensitive to new ideas and environment, social issues and human values.

Through this programme, Open University Malaysia (OUM) is able to contribute meaningfully towards professional workforce, especially in the number of qualified Master of Information Technology graduates. This programme will also be able to add to the need of the workforce that is very necessary now and in time to come, such as Network Solutions Manager / Engineer, Wireless Broadband Engineer, Architect / Developer IT Network Applications, Telecommunications Software Developer, Data Networking Expert.

  • Ijazah Sarjana Muda yang setara dengannya, dengan minimum PNGK 2.75;

  • Ijazah Sarjana Muda atau yang setara dengannya, dengan minimum PNGK 2.50 dan tidak mencapai PNGK 2.75, boleh diterima masuk bergantung pada proses penilaian dalaman yang rapi;

ATAU

  • Ijazah Sarjana Muda atau yang setara dengannya, dengan PNGK kurang daripada 2.50, dengan minimum 5 tahun pengalaman bekerja dalam bidang yang berkaitan boleh diterima masuk.

Bagi calon yang tidak memiliki Ijazah Komputeran, modul-modul prasyarat dalam komputeran mesti ditawarkan untuk mempersiapkan mereka untuk menghadapi pengajian lanjutan.

  1. Warganegara Malaysia; DAN
  2. Calon hendaklah berumur 30 tahun dan ke atas pada tahun permohonan dibuat; DAN
  3. Mempunyai pengalaman bekerja/pengalaman pembelajaran terdahulu yang berkaitan; DAN
  4. Lulus Penilaian APEL bagi Sarjana (yang dikendalikan oleh OUM); DAN
  5. Memiliki kelayakan seperti berikut:
    • STPM / Diploma yang diiktiraf; Atau
    • Matrikulasi / Asasi / Foundation (nilai kredit 50-52 kredit ; nilai gred PNGK 2.00 dan ke atas ; tempoh pengajian sekurang-kurangnya setahun) ; Atau
    • A-Level (jumlah kursus minimum 3 ; nilai gred minimum E ; tempoh pengajian sekurang-kurangnya 18 bulan) ; Atau
    • International Baccalaureate Diploma (jumlah kursus minimum 6 kumpulan kursus dan 3 elemen wajib ; nilai gred minimum 24 point dan ke atas ; tempoh pengajian sekurang-kurangnya 2 tahun).

Normal Entry

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent, with a minimum CGPA of 2.75;

OR

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent, with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and not meeting CGPA of 2.75, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment process;

OR

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent, with CGPA less than 2.50, with a minimum of 5 years working experience in a relevant field may be accepted.

For candidates without Computing Degree, prerequisite modules in computing must be offered to adequately prepare them for their advanced study.

OR

APEL entry

  1. Malaysian; AND
  2. The candidate should be more than 30 years of age in the year of application; AND
  3. Relevant work experience / prior experiential learning; AND
  4. Pass the APEL Assessment (Aptitude Test, Portfolio & Interview) conducted by OUM; AND
  5. Possess the following qualification:
    • STPM / Recognised Diploma; Or
    • Matriculation / Foundation (credit score 50-52 credits; CGPA grade 2.00 and above; minimum study period of one year); Or
    • A-Level (minimum of 3 courses; minimum grade E; duration of study at least 18 months); Or
    • International Baccalaureate Diploma (minimum of 6 courses and 3 required elements; minimum grade of 24 points and above; duration of study at least 2 years).

Note:

  1. The provisional offer of admission will be revoked if the candidate:
    1. Fails to submit evidence of qualification within the stipulated date; or
    2. Does not meet the entry requirements of the University.
  2. Entry requirements are subject to change as stipulated by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.

Discount for the Physically Challenged Learners (OKU) and Senior Citizens

The University offers 50% discount for:

  • Senior citizens aged 60 and above on registration date; and
  • Physically challenged learners – a valid Orang Kelainan Upaya (OKU) is required.

These discounts are for subject fees only and are not applicable for research and other fees. The discounts are also not valid for second time registration and repeating of subjects.

Learners who receive this discount are not entitled to other discounts and promotions.

Processing fee:

  • RM50 (Malaysian) & RM100 (International Students)

Re-registration fee of RM220 per semester is chargeable for extension of Masters Projects

Master of Information Technology (MIT) Faqs

  1. What are the entry requirements for this programme?
    Normal Entry
    A Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent, with a minimum CGPA of 2.75;
    OR

  2. Can I join MIT with just my Diploma certificate?
    Yes, you can. Through the flexible entry of APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) not only can working adults gain admission into OUM by leveraging on their prior learning experiences, they can also use their experiences to earn credits in order to shorten their study duration.

  3. I do not have Diploma / Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Information Systems, what do I need to do?
    For the MIT programme, a bachelor’s degree in any field is accepted. For candidates without Computing Degree, two prerequisite modules in computing is offered in your first semester of study, to adequately prepare you for MIT. These two courses are Fundamentals of ICT and Programming Languages. Once you have passed these courses, you may join the remaining MIT courses.

  4. The MIT programme is offered as a part-time or full-time programme at OUM?
    All OUM programmes offered in Malaysia are run in part-time mode, making them suitable for working adults seeking to upgrade their qualifications and skills in Information Technology, without having to give up their jobs or compromise on their life responsibilities.

  5. When should I join the MIT programme?
    OUM has three intakes in a year, January, May and September.

  6. What is the assessment like for the MIT programme?
    Most of the courses have assignment and final exams. The pre-requisite courses, research methodology and project papers are 100% assignment-based.

  7. What are the courses offered in MIT?
    The program is offered in 6 semesters (2 years) with a total of 40 credits and 12 structured courses.
    MIT currently have up-to-date core courses essential for IT industry, with electives from IT management, networking and data science.

  8. Do I need to attend the tutorials, how many times do I need to attend?
    For the MIT programme, it is offered as a fully online programme as well as blended mode.
    For the online mode, you can follow the OUM programme from anywhere in Malaysia, at your own pace, with your peers in our myInspire portal, with the guidance of your e-tutor. For this mode, you do not need to attend any of the face-to-face tutorials or seminars.
    The blended mode refers to the combination of online study and face-to-face tutorials/seminars. Face-to-face seminars are offered only at the OUM Graduate School (OUMGC) at Kelana Jaya Learning Center. You will attend eight hours in total for each blended mode courses in a semester (2 hours x 4 seminars). 
  9. Do I need to purchase any textbooks?
    All core learning materials in the form of e-books/modules are provided to you as a student. We also have an extensive digital collection in our Tan Sri Dr. Abdullah Sanusi Digital Library (TSDAS DL).

  10. What is the fee for the whole programme?

  11. Will I need to learn programming?
    This programme is carried out to prepare the workforce by strengthening the managerial skills and competencies in computerised technical know-how, improving managerial capability in handling information management in business organisations, producing knowledge workers who will be the future leaders in the nation’s progress and enhancing analytical skills and problem-solving capability in handling current issues in computer related management. The courses offered in this programme will be expected to produce graduates, whom are knowledgeable in the field of technology as well as sensitive to new ideas and environment, social issues and human values.
    If you decide take the data science electives: machine learning, you will need to learn Python programming. Those taking the pre-requisite courses will learn Java programming in the Programming Language course. 
  12. Why should I join the MIT programme?
    MIT is designed to cater for graduates from IT and non-IT backgrounds, to enhance their ICT knowledge and skills and advance their position in the rapidly changing ICT industry.
    Managers within organisations where ICT plays a major role in the managerial and operations functions will find this programme useful. 
  13. Is the MIT programme accredited?
    The MIT programme is a fully accredited programme since 2005 and has undergone a compliance audit in 2019. 
  14. What can I do after MIT?
    As career opportunities, you are able to be a project manager, information technology manager, chief technology officer, management information systems director, information security analyst, technical services manager.
    You may also pursue your PhD in Information Technology, and this programme is also offered at OUM.
