Prof Dr Mohd Afandi Salleh

Adjunct Professor (Political Science)

Dr. Mohd Afandi Salleh is a Professor of International Relations at the Faculty of Law and International Relations, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Terengganu. He has served as a lecturer at public institutions of higher learning since 1996.Professor Dr. Mohd Afandi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He later pursued a Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Law at Lancaster University, UK, and completed his Ph.D. in International Relations at Durham University, UK.He is the founding figure behind the establishment of the Faculty of Law and International Relations at UniSZA, where he also pioneered the International Relations programme and served as the Head of Department. He was subsequently appointed as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs) at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin from 2018 to 2021.In addition to his core academic responsibilities, Prof. Mohd Afandi is actively involved in international humanitarian and human rights missions. He is notably committed to advocating for the liberation of the Palestinian people from Israeli occupation and has participated in three humanitarian missions to Gaza. Beyond Gaza, he has also contributed to humanitarian efforts in Syria, Lebanon, South Sudan, and Cambodia.In 2017, he was part of the prosecuting legal team at the Permanent People’s Tribunal (PPT) for the case “State Crimes Allegedly Committed in Myanmar against the Rohingyas, Kachins, and Other Groups.” In 2018, Prof. Mohd Afandi was Malaysia’s sole representative among a 22-member delegation from 20 countries in the Freedom Flotilla – Just Future for Palestine voyage to Gaza from Italy, aimed at delivering food and medical aid. During this mission, he was abducted by Israeli forces in the Mediterranean Sea and detained in Tel Aviv.Prof. Mohd Afandi is currently a Senior Fellow for International Affairs at Humanitarian Care Malaysia (MyCare), a Malaysian NGO with ECOSOC status from the United Nations. He also serves as the Honorary Advisor of MyCare for the state of Terengganu. At the international level, he is an Advisor to the League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds, an Istanbul-based institution that coordinates parliamentary efforts worldwide in support of the Palestinian cause, in line with United Nations resolutions.He is also a member of the International Consultative Council for Palestine, chaired by Sheikh Ekrimah Sabri, the Grand Imam of Al-Aqsa Mosque. Additionally, he serves as a Board Member of the Malaysian chapter of Pure Hands, a Texas-based international humanitarian NGO, and was on the Board of Directors for the Student Volunteers Foundation (YSS) Malaysia from 2018 to 2021.Prof. Mohd Afandi is also active in the world of Malay martial arts and currently holds the title of Chief Khalifah (Sandang Seri Mahkota Agong Cula Pelangi) under the Pertubuhan Silat Gayong Serantau Malaysia.On matters concerning human rights, he is a Senior Fellow at the Malaysia Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for the UPR Process (MACSA). He has undergone intensive human rights training organized by the Geneva International Centre for Justice (GICJ) in Geneva, the ASEAN University Network, and the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights. He was one of eight MACSA delegates who actively participated in Malaysia’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the United Nations in Geneva in January 2024.
