Programme Synopsis

Due to the current shift towards knowledge-based economy, there is a growing demand for highly-educated teachers or educational leaders to manage schools and institutions more effectively.

In line with this demand, the Master of Education is designed with the following objectives :

  • To produce graduates who have wide education knowledge and skills to function as effective teachers, education officers or lecturers in educational institutions.
  • To produce education leaders who are capable of making decisions, planning and carrying out duties that are entrusted on them effectively.
  • To produce academicians who are capable of conducting research in their related fields of specialization.

The Master of Education is especially suited for teachers, school principals, college lecturers and other education personnel who wish to equip themselves with up-to-date knowledge and specialized skills for continuous personal improvement as well as career enhancement in their professions.

Programme Education Objectives (PEO)

This programme aims to produce graduates that are;

PEO1: Knowledgeable and highly skilled to function as educational leaders who demonstrate quality leadership and effective communication. (Cognitive)

PEO2: Capable of using scientific methods with demonstration of good critical thinking and problem solving skills to plan and carry out duties entrusted to them taking into account ethical considerations and professionalism. (Affective)

PEO3: Able to communicate, including using digital technology, on educational matters effectively and recommend changes for improvement to incorporate lifelong learning. (Affective)

PEO4: Capable of conducting research and leadership improvement projects with effective entrepreneurship and managerial skills. (Affective)

Upon completion of all courses in this programme, the graduates should be able to:

Sarjana Muda dalam bidang yang berkaitan dengan PNGK minimum 2.50 tetapi kurang 2.75 boleh diterima masuk dengan syarat tertakluk kepada penilaian dalaman yang ketat; atau

A. Mode B (Coursework and Research)

Normal Entry
Bachelor degree in related field accepted by Senate with a minimum CGPA of 2.75; or
Bachelor degree in related field with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 but below 2.75 is acceptable subject to a comprehensive internal assessment; or
Bachelor degree below CGPA of 2.50 is acceptable subject to a minimum of 5 years working experience in related field.

OR

APEL entry

  1. Malaysian; AND
  2. The candidate should be more than 30 years of age in the year of application; AND
  3. Relevant work experience / prior experiential learning; AND
  4. Pass the APEL Assessment (Aptitude Test, Portfolio & Interview) conducted by OUM; AND
  5. Possess the following qualification:
    • STPM / Recognised Diploma; Or
    • Matriculation / Foundation (credit score 50-52 credits; CGPA grade 2.00 and above; minimum study period of one year); Or
    • A-Level (minimum of 3 courses; minimum grade E; duration of study at least 18 months); Or
    • International Baccalaureate Diploma (minimum of 6 courses and 3 required elements; minimum grade of 24 points and above; duration of study at least 2 years).

B. Mode C (Coursework)

Normal Entry
Bachelor degree in related field with a mininum CGPA of 2.50 or its equivalent as accepted by Senate and posses a recognised Diploma in Education or Certificate/Diploma in Teaching; or
Bachelor Degree in Education with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 or its equivalent as accepted by Senate; or
Bachelor degree or its equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.50, is acceptable subject to a minimum of 2 years working experience in related field; or
Bachelor degree or its equivalent but with CGPA below 2.50, is acceptable subject to a minimum of 5 years working experience in related field.

OR

APEL entry

  1. Malaysian; AND
  2. The candidate should be more than 30 years of age in the year of application; AND
  3. Relevant work experience / prior experiential learning; AND
  4. Pass the APEL Assessment (Aptitude Test, Portfolio & Interview) conducted by OUM; AND

  1. The provisional offer of admission will be revoked if the candidate:
    1. Fails to submit evidence of qualification within the stipulated date; or
    2. Does not meet the entry requirements of the University.

Discount for the Physically Challenged Learners (OKU) and Senior Citizens

The University offers 50% discount for:

  • Senior citizens aged 60 and above on registration date; and
  • Physically challenged learners – a valid Orang Kelainan Upaya (OKU) is required.

These discounts are for subject fees only and are not applicable for research and other fees. The discounts are also not valid for second time registration and repeating of subjects.

Learners who receive this discount are not entitled to other discounts and promotions.

Re-registration fee of RM220 per semester is chargeable for extension of Masters Projects

Master of Education (MEd) Faqs

  1. What is Master of Education?
    This is a master’s programme that leads to the award of Master of Education degree.

  2.  Is the MEd accredited and recognised by the Malaysian government?
    Yes, MEd is fully accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and recognised by the government.  The certificate is as follows:MEd cert
  3. Who should join the MEd?
    MEd is suitable for all educators, especially those in administration and leadership position and those aspiring to be in leadership and management position.  It is suitable for all education practitioners who wish to equip themselves with up-to-date knowledge and specialized skills for continuous personal improvement as well as career enhancement in their professions.

  4. I have a bachelor’s degree in education.  Can I join this programme?
    Yes, one of the requirements for entry is a bachelor’s degree in education related field.  You need to have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.50 and above.  If your CGPA is less than 2.50, you are required to have 2 years of teaching experience.

  5. I have a bachelor’s degree in a non education field and a diploma in education, can I join?
    Yes, you can gain entry with a non education degree if you have a diploma in education.  You need to have a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.50 and above.  If your CGPA is less than 2.50, you are required to have 2 years of teaching experience.

  6. I have a non education degree but I have been teaching for 7 years.  Can I join the MEd?
    Yes, you can gain entry but subject to your CGPA and teaching experience.  If your CGPA is above 2.50, you will need to show proof of at least 2 years teaching experience.  If your CGPA is less than 2.50, you will need to show proof of at least 5 years teaching experience.

  7. I have not got a bachelor’s degree but I have been teaching for many years.  Can I join MEd?
    Yes, you might still be eligible to join MEd through APEL A entry, if you are a Malaysian and have the following requirements:

    • At least 30 years old in the year of application; AND
    • Possess the following qualification:
      • STPM / Recognised Diploma; Or
      • Matriculation / Foundation (credit score 50-52 credits; CGPA grade 2.00 and above; minimum study period of one year); Or
      • A-Level (minimum of 3 courses; minimum grade E; duration of study at least 18 months); Or
      • International Baccalaureate Diploma (minimum of 6 courses and 3 required elements; minimum grade of 24 points and above; duration of study at least 2 years); AND
    • Have relevant work experience/ prior experiential learning in the field of education; AND
    • Pass the APEL Assessment (Aptitude Test, Portfolio & Interview) conducted by OUM.

  8. Is the MEd programme offered in full-time or part-time mode?
    The MEd, just like all other programmes offered by OUM, is offered on a part-time mode.  This makes the programme suitable for working adults as you will not have to give up your job and you can still study as you work.

  9. How long does it take to complete the MEd?
    The duration for MEd is 2 years, which is equivalent to 6 semesters.  However, some learners take longer depending on their needs. OUM is well known for our flexibility of study period.  You can extend your studies up to 4 years.

  10. How many credit hours do I need to complete?  How many credit hours are the courses?
    In MEd, you are required to complete 42 credit hours.  Just to give you an idea, one credit hour is normally equivalent to 40 learning hours. 
    Every course is assigned 3 credit hours, except for the projects.  Master’s Project is 9 credit hours and School Leadership Improvement Project (SLIP) is 6 credit hours.

  11. Are there options in MEd for me to choose from when I start the programme?
    Yes, you can choose from one of the following options:

  12. Do I need to do a research project?
    You need to do the master’s project which is a research-based project if you choose option (i) above.  You need to do the School Leadership Improvement Project (SLIP) if you choose option (iii).  You need not do a master’s project if you take option (ii).
    You can opt out of the master’s project in option (i) if you decide not to do the master’s project well into your studies.  You will instead be given 3 in lieu courses to replace the master’s project.  Master’s project is 9 credit hours and replacement is with 3 courses (3 credit hours each).
  13. What is the difference between these options with regards to courses offered?
    There are some courses which are different between these options.  Please note that option (i) and option (ii) have almost the same courses in the structure while some of these courses are not offered in option (iii).
    For Master’s Project in option (i), the candidate is allowed to change the master’s project and take in lieu 3 courses instead.

  14. Can I choose any one of these options?
    Yes, you can choose any one option.  However, you can only choose option (iii) if you are attached to an educational institution, such as college, school, preschool centre and so forth.  This is due to the SLIP which can only be conducted in an educational institution where you are attached.

  15. What is the duration of the Master’s Project and SLIP?
    The duration is for 2 semesters.  You will do your project in the 5th and 6th semesters.  However, you can extend the period to a maximum of 8 semesters.

  16. How are classes conducted for MEd?
    Classes are conducted fully online.  You have resources in the learning platform called MyInspire.  You will have 10 e-tutorial sessions of one hour each over the duration of the semester, conducted on weekends or weekdays evenings.  These sessions are online face to face sessions with your e-tutors.  You will also have access to your module and other resources.  E-lessons are provided for self-learning and these are useful for discussion during your e-tutorial sessions too. There is a forum for discussion and you will interact with your e-tutor as well as course mates here.

  17. How many courses will I do every semester?
    In the first three semesters (first year), you will be offered 3 courses per semester.  In your second year, the courses offered could be 2 or 3 courses depending on your option.

  18. How would I be assessed in the MEd courses?
    In MEd, assessment is done through formative and summative evaluation.  For most of the courses, assignments are allocated 60% while final exam is 40%.  Some courses do not have final examination and assessment is entirely assignment-based (100%).  Courses which are fully assignment-based are Quantitative Research Methodology, Qualitative Research Methodology, Statistics for Educational Research, Educational Research Methodology, Directed Reading/ Seminar Paper and both the Master’s Project and SLIP.

  19. Where is the final examination held?
    Normally, exams are held at the Learning Centre where you register or the one nearest to you.  Since the MCO, exams are conducted fully online.  This means that you are able to take the exams online from anywhere in the world.   OUM will advise about the mode of final exam from time to time.

  20. Who are the academic staff delivering the MEd studies?
    The MEd programme is delivered by qualified and experienced subject-matter experts, both OUM internal academicians and external academicians from renowned universities.

  21. How much does it cost to pursue MEd?
    Fees for MEd is RM18,396.  You will pay in instalments every semester as you progress in your studies.
    A 50% discount of fees is offered to qualified senior citizens (60 years of age and above) and physically-challenged learners with a valid OKU card.
    Note: The University reserves the right to revise the fees without prior notice.
