Overview
The Master of Education in Teaching English as a Second Language (MTESL) program is designed to produce advanced graduates who can effectively apply advanced knowledge and theories to the practice of teaching English as a second language. Furthermore, in this programme, graduates are equiped with the technical competence and digital literacy needed to deliver high-quality instruction to diverse learners in a globalized world. In addition, graduates will learn to innovatively solve issues related to teaching English as a second language, demonstrate leadership and autonomy in educational settings, and practice professional and ethical values. In terms of the curriculum, it emphasizes the development of excellent communication and interpersonal skills, preparing graduates to communicate effectively with various audiences. Finally, a key focus of the program is to foster a commitment to lifelong learning and an entrepreneurial mindset, enabling graduates to adapt and respond to the fluid and dynamic nature of the English language teaching profession especially in an English as a second language context.

The University offers 50% discount for:
1. Senior citizens aged 60 and above on registration date; and
2. Physically challenged learners – a valid Orang Kelainan Upaya (OKU) is required.
The discounts are not valid for second time registration and repeating of subjects.
Learners who receive this discount are not entitled to other discounts and promotions.

- How long does it take to complete a Master’s in TESL?
The program is structured to be completed over two years, which consists of six semesters.
- How is the program structured?
The program requires the completion of 40 total credit hours. The curriculum includes a mix of core courses like Theories and Practices in Teaching and Learning and discipline-specific courses such as Second Language Acquisition. The program culminates with a 6-credit Project Paper in the final two semesters.
- Do I need a teaching degree to apply for a Master’s in TESL?
No, a teaching degree is not strictly required. However, candidates without a qualification in a teaching degree must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses and a rigorous internal assessment.
- What are the entry requirements for the Master of Education in TESL program?
There are several pathways for admission:
- A Bachelor’s degree in TESL, TESOL, or TEFL with a minimum CGPA of 2.50.
- A Bachelor’s degree in TESL, TESOL, or TEFL with a CGPA between 2.00 and 2.49, subject to a rigorous internal assessment.
- Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in a field not related to TESL must undergo prerequisite courses and a rigorous internal assessment. They must also achieve at least a B2 level in the CEFR or Band 4 in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET).
- What is the total tuition fee for the program?
The total fee for the entire program is RM 25,000. There are different fee structures for OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya – Person with disability) students (RM 12,500.00), WE (Warga Emas – Senior citizens) students (RM 12,500.00), and international students (RM 29,920.00).
- Is a teaching practice a requirement to complete the Master of Education in TESL program?
No, teaching practice is not a requirement to cmplete the Master of Education in TESL program.
- How to register for the pre-requisite courses and what is the fee for each course?
Go to the Cellplus website at cellplus.oum.edu.my, create a new account, and choose your pre-requisite course for MTESL.
The cost for each pre-requisite course is RM250.
